Polishing instructions
dated: 18. September 2009

The red coloured links will lead you to the appropriate products in our webshop:
http://shop.metall-polish.de/. Of course it is also possible to search for the products straight away in our shop.

In order to be able to polish all metals obtaining a highgloss finish, you need the following tools and materials:

- Drilling machine, flexible shaft or polishing trestle
- Polishing discs for preparatory work and polishing paste
- Polishing discs and paste
- Discs for the final polishing and the appropriate paste
- Toolholder (work arbors)
and, last but not least, patience and manual skill!

To polish aluminium, you need the following tools:
1.a polishing disc for the preparatory work Sisal, Sisal-Nessel, Fibre oder Sisal-Kordel natur
with Abra 153 polishing paste
2.a polishing disc
Nessel (for example quilted) using brown Rekord 855 paste.
3.for the final work use
Molton (for example quilted) with blue Lumo 934 highgloss finishing paste

For high quality stainless steel:
1.a polishing disc for the preparatory work Sisal-Kordel (green, orange or red) oroder Sisal with Kiesolin 410 paste
2.a polishing disc (for the final high-end work)
Molton with blue Lumo 934 or green Lumo 910 highgloss paste

To polish synthetic materials
1.Polishing disc Nessel with brown Kiesolin 321 polishing paste for synthetics
2.a polishing disc (for the final high-end work)
Molton with brown Lumo 939 highgloss paste

For wooden materials
1.Polishing disc Nessel with brown Kiesolin 325 oder Kiesolin 327 polishing paste
2.
Polishing disc (for the final high-end work)
Molton with brown Lumo P3 highgloss paste

Before starting the polishing, please note the following, very important issues:
“Never sand-blast aluminium materials!“
Sandblasting is a procedure during which small bulletts are shot against the material. The surface will be
damaged and tiny cracks will be visible. In most cases hig-end polishing will not give satisfying results,
despite preparatory grinding.
In cas you encounter problems removing lacquers ( alloid wheels, cover-parts on motorbikes), please call us

(+49 2043 377740), we will be happy to give you the best possible support!

All chromed parts and surfaces (aluminium, brass steel) should be de-metalized in advance.
This work can be done by us as well

We grind metal surfaces
n order to obtain optimal results, the surface of the material should be grinded ( in more than one step) up
to a fine degree of 400. The difference in grading of the « grinding-steps » should not be more than 100.
If you perform the grinding by hand, we advise to use our flexible Schleifklotz for klett-adherent grinding paper.
If you grind using a drilling machine or flexible shaft, please use a Kleinschleifmop and
Polivlies,
for areas (cracks and dimples included) that are hard to reach, we advise to use Policap and Poliroll mounted points.
If you work with a polishing trestle, please use a Fächerrad/Schleifmopräder.
Before polishing, all possible traces of lacquer, Eloxal, chromium or any other coating material should be removed from the surface of the metal.

We polish aluminium facings
If the preparatory grinding work has been done as described, you can go ahead with the polishing.
The first step is to take a polishing disc ( Sisal, Sisal-Nessel, Fibre oder Sisal-Kordel- natur ) and
and to clamp it on your tool holder (
Aufspanndorn). The tool holder should now be attached to the drilling machine.

Pre-polishing of aluminium – part 1
Now the Abra 153 paste should be put on the
Sisal pre-polish disc:
The disc on the drilling machine (or flexible shaft) should rotate while you apply the paste with little pressure
for about 2 seconds. Then perform the polishing for 30 seconds and again apply the paste as already
described. Thus the disc will absorb the paste in a smooth and consistent way.
After 10 minutes the disc is fully « worked up » and applying of the paste on the disc will only be necessary
every other 2 or 3 minutes.

Polishing of aluminium – part 2
Apply the Rekord 855 paste on the Nessel
polishing disc. Let your drilling machine or flexible shaft
run. Now take the paste to the disc and apply the paste for about 2 seconds. Then perform the polishing for
30 seconds and again apply the paste as already described. Thus the disc will absorb the paste in a smooth
and consistent way.
After 10 minutes the disc is fully « worked up » and applying of the paste on the disc will only be necessary
every other 2 or 3 minutes.

Aluminium – Final highgloss - part 3
In order to obtain a high-gloss result, the material should now get a final finish. You should only put a very
small dab of paste
Lumo 934 on the Molton polishing disc/cloth. Now polish the material in a nice and
smooth way, giving only a little pressure. A high-gloss finish will appear instantly. The material should in this
case be warm, otherwise black spots remain. The best thing to do before you start this procedure, is to have
the sun shine on the material for a short while. « Warm parts » can be brought to high-gloss within a few seconds only.
The
Molton high-gloss clearing disc is the softest one you can get.
By following the procedure as described, it is possible to obtain an absolute brilliant, mirror-like gloss.
If still some black spots should be visible on the material, we advise to use
Ecromal,
It cleans, conserves and nourishes the high-gloss polished surface.
Ecromal should be applied manually with a smooth and soft cloth.

Polishing technique
Optimal results for polishing large parts will be obtained if you hold the the rotating disc with very little
pressure against the material, performing up and down movements.
This part of the procedure should be continued until the material shines in a high-gloss quality, is absolutely
smooth and no grooves or rills are visible or felt.
Only work on areas at the size of a fist and take care that the material becomes warm.
The warmth will soften the paste on the disc and will give better polishing results.
If you work on smaller parts, we advise to fix the machine into a bench vice and hold the part against the
machine by hand.

The polishing-speed should be somewhere between 20 and 30 m/s
For example:
Using a disc of 100mm diameter, the speed should be approximately 4000 - 6000 UPM,
150mm 2500 - 4000 UPM,
200mm 1900 - 3000 UPM,
250mm 1600 - 2400 UPM
300mm 1300 - 1900 UPM

If you happen to posess a drill or a polishing trestle capable of doing 2800 UPM, we advise to use polishing
discs with a diameter of 150 – 200mm in order to obtain the best possible results in polishing.

IMPORTANT:
Please use the polishing disc with one and the same paste only. Never mix different pastes.
Pastes combined with individual discs have specific characteristics. Optimal results can only be obtained
by not mixing up discs and pastes.
This means that if you work different kinds of material ( aluminium, brass, zinc, stainless steel etc.),

you should use a different disc at each separate occasion.

Example: You wish to pre-polish aluminium
Only use a
Sisal-Nessel-pre-polishing disc with „ Abra 153 Brushpaste.
However, when polishing VA (highest quality of stainless steel), use a new
Sisal-Nessel--pre-polish disc with „green Kiesolin 410 paste“.
